ESPN_MLB3/1/2013 8:18:05 PMBad news for @Indians fans. Chris Perez out 3-4 weeks: http://t.co/IyUUa0gkRWRecommend0 Tweet0 Comments0 Email Print GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez has been scratched from the World Baseball Classic and could miss the start of the regular season after suffering a strained right shoulder in spring training. The Indians said Perez will take a break of seven to 10 days before starting a throwing program. He is expected to resume pitching in Cactus League games in three to four weeks, which could jeopardize his availablity for Cleveland's season opener in Toronto on April 2. "I'm not saying nothing," Perez told reporters Friday as he drove out of Cleveland's spring training complex. He later tweeted: "Small hurdle at an in-opportune time. I feel better now than I did last year with the oblique..Still plenty of time." Perez, an All-Star in each of the past two seasons, ranked second in the American League with 39 saves in 2012. He is fourth in franchise history with 99 saves. General manager Chris Antonetti said Perez hurt himself while pitching in a recent spring training game, and the Indians chose to shut him down after he was examined by trainer Lonnie Soloff and the team medical staff. Antonetti said the Indians are hopeful that Perez will be ready by Opening Day. "We think so, but we'll have to see,'' Antonetti said. "The most important thing is to make sure he puts the injury behind him, and once he comes back, he's ready to go.'' Vinnie Pestano, who went 3-3 with a 2.57 ERA, 76 strikeouts in 70 innings and two saves last season, is the most likely candidate to assume the closer role in the event Perez isn't ready for the season opener. Pestano is scheduled to leave Cleveland's camp Sunday to pitch for Team USA in the WBC. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. ESPN_MLB2/28/2013 9:56:53 PMElvis Andrus had to sit out due to soreness from a new tattoo. Seriously. http://t.co/jVFKGgFRjw #rangersRecommend0 Tweet0 Comments0 Email Print 2013 Fantasy: Elvis Andrus vs. Alcides Escobar ESPN fantasy analysts discuss the draft value of Elvis Andrus versus Alcides Escobar.Tags: Fantasy Baseball, Fantasy Roundtable, 2013 Preview, Draft Kit, Matthew Berry, Eric Karabell, Tristan Cockcroft, Elvis Andrus, Alcides Escobar, Shortstop 2013 Fantasy: Elvis Andrus vs. Alcides Escobar SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus was scratched from Thursday's Cactus League game against the Cleveland Indians due to muscle soreness in his left arm caused by a new tattoo. Andrus was given an off day Wednesday after playing consecutive games earlier in the week, and he apparently used some of the downtime to add new ink. Andrus originally was slated to bat third in Thursday's lineup but will be replaced by rookie Jurickson Profar. "Elvis has been working hard, and having another off day isn't going to hurt him," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "He'll be ready tomorrow." The tattoo filled most of Andrus' left arm from shoulder to elbow, so it isn't surprising he is experiencing soreness. The image features a large face as a tribute to his late father, with crossed baseball bats underneath the face. Andrus was a key contributor for the Rangers last year, and is expected to play an even greater role in his fifth season with the team, following the departure of a number of key players, including Josh Hamilton and Mike Napoli. "He's becoming a man and a mainstay and is acting like it," Washington said. "He is getting better in all phases of his game." Andrus is one of seven Rangers players currently scheduled to play in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, where he will represent his native Venezuela.
