First, there was the Dallas Cowboys.  Tom Landry came from the New York Giants to be the coach, something that Giants fans regret to this day.  Roger Staubach, a legitimately good, squeaky clean guy, became the starting quarterback over Craig Morton.  And, of course, there was always Dandy Don Meredith, who became for famous for joining Frank Gifford and Howard Cosell in the booth at Monday Night Football, then he did on the field for the Cowboys.

Remember Homer Jones?  Yes.  The were good.  And, they were America’s Team.  Who knows why, because like most machine-like winners, they had lots of haters.  But, when Jerry Jones took over, “The Hat” was unceremoniously let go, and Jimmy Johnson took them to a Super Bowl win.  But, while Jerry Jones continued to market them, perhaps he over-marketed them, and they became somewhat less than America’s team.  And, with Jerry Jones not being a very good GM, unfortunately, there are probably no glory days to look for in the future for Dallas fans.

The University of Texas and Texas A&M football have always been Big-Time in Dallas.  High School Football dominates the culture, with teenagers building their world around the Friday Night schedule.  The Cowboys had their chance for the University of Texas’ Colt McCoy, but they let him slip past a few times during the draft, and the Cleveland Browns signed him instead.  Notwithstanding the fact that Tony Romo is a good quarterback, he doesn’t have the leadership ability needed in the NFL, and he doesn’t have anywhere near the star appeal Colt McCoy would have had in Dallas.

In 2011, the Dallas Mavericks are big time.  Mark Cuban finally brought a winner and Dirk Nowitzki came up big.  But, with the team they have, don’t look for a dynasty.  America loves Dirk more they love the Cowboys, which tells you something about how a hard working guy who makes good is appreciated in the country, even if he is from Germany.

The Texas Rangers were purchased amongst great angst by local hero Nolan Ryan and a group he put together.  And, they are winning, and look to be in the playoffs again.  Last year’s World Series run was great news for the city, and Josh Hamilton made a name for himself.  But, we can expect either the New York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox to end their quest this year.  Maybe next year.

The Dallas Stars won a Stanley Cup a few years back.  No one in Dallas cares.  NHL is way behind NFLNCAA Football, High School Football and MLB.  Good luck.
